You need to have a note of the figures on the small plate on the end of the front panel (about 3" x 1/2" in size, painted body colour), about a foot to the left of the metal VIN plate. http://www.hallvw.clara.co.uk/dating.htm AFAIK, this technique works for all '70-on VWs; you can even do it for new ones, though the figures you need are in other places, but still have a similar pattern. If you let me know the number I can decode it for you if my instructions on the webpage aren't clear enough. You will need to be able to look up '71 dates - MS Word has a calendar wizard that calculates any year. Dave.
