Re: trouble in paradise

said the shaft had too much play in it and he thought it was worn out.

When my distributors have failed, you could move the distributor shaft from side to side and actually see the point gap change. Hm, I think they always have some up-and-down freedom, but don't quote me on that. (The last one that failed on would move way up, and then *really* move side-to-side.)

I have some serviceable spare distributors. They're mostly Ls or ABs. Not sure what's best for 70AT. (I'm in Berkeley.)

gauge. When I slip it between the points, I feel a little bump in
there---is that normal, or is there some kind of blemish or deposit on

I believe what happens is that material leaves one side and deposits itself on the other. The bump can be filed off with a small, clean file. I tend to avoid the bump when adjusting the points, but have lately been doing it more by the dwell meter.

Does the bump matter at all, so long as the dwell is set within spec according to the dwell meter? Or does the ignition always perform more poorly when there is buildup on the points?
