I looked at a 1970 squareback that I saw in the local pare today. It has just been painted a metalicy blue, and I'm afraid they did it to cover something up. It looks to be rust free, mostly, so maybe they were covering up the wavy body damage. Overall it looks good. So, I start snapping photos. As I am taking pics of the front trunk the girl selling it came out and said "are you looking for the engine, cause its in the back". My wife started laughing. I told here I have another one of these at home. I'm guessing she knows nothing of the car and I think was informed incorrectly about the shape of it from the start, she is selling it for her brother the camarro guy. She told my there is like 9-10,000 mile on the recent rebuild, you couldn't tell from looking at it. The left side injector wires have been spliced with speaker wire or something. And the bottom of the engine is caked with oil/mud compound. All the rubber in the engine is shot, and I don't think the bellows has ever been touched so it is probably way out of tune. Definitely not recently rebuilt. So I jump in the take it for a test drive and it takes a while to get it started up. But I couldn't get it up the slight hump (not hill) near her house, so I gave it more gas and it sounded like it was only about 1800 rpm at full throttle. So I get it up the hump eventually, no power at all, and then it stalls and I can't get going again. The fuel pump goes as long as the key is on and the ignition does not spring from start to on, so you have to manually turn it yourself. Quite a car. Here are some pics. http://vwt3.orntar.net/70square.html The paper said "runs great, $1750 obo". Wow! If they can get it started consistently, then I might offer 1200, but if not I will try 800 or so. I think they want more for it than it worth, but they are not the owners so maybe I can talk em into it. This would be my commuter while I restore the fasty, if I can salvage the engine. I'm sure its injector wires/timing kinda problems. I'll let you know. cheers nathan http://www.orntar.net/project/vwt3.html 70 fastback ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
