Thought they don't discuss it in detail,
I think the last two are why http://vwvagabonds.com/
changed out their motor from the original FI
in their '76 bus. The ability to find parts
and fix it essentially world wide. I saw them
a couple of months ago heading west from Lake Tahoe.

I think there were several reasons for still offering the single carb 
version:

- lower production cost
- ability to run on low octane fuel
- simplicity; less maintenance required and no special training 
required for carburetor adjustment
