Cut up a coathanger and form a bend in one end so you can "sweep" under the pulley and see if there's anything hiding under there. I often find stones, etc, which aren't too important, but at this point we're just looking for clues. Look and feel as far back in the bellows as possible to see if there's anything laying there, too. Also check the underside of the engine cover for damage. > >There's not much motion in the vac > >advance since you also have mech > >advance, which he may not have been > >aware of. > > I thought he might be wrong about that, because whe I did the points a > few monhs ago, there wasn't much movement and the car ran fine. I would be glad to look it over for no charge as long as you pay the shipping. If it needs work I can do that and can tell you what it would cost. The basic charge is $55, which includes return shipping and any small parts that might be needed. Major parts are additional, but are not often needed. > >I think the first thing you need is a second > >opinion. > > Love one---what do you think is going on? If not, do it with the engine warm and running and the AT in N. The dipstick is in the engine compartment. If it's low that would explain a lot. Note that this level is often hard to read and you want to be somewhat careful not to overfill it. Filling often requires a special funnel, which you can buy at your FLAPS along with the Dexron/Mercon ATF. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
