No. This could conceivably be some gunk in one of the carbs, but what I'd look for first is a loose electrical connection at the coil. => fuel filters: should I have one in the engine compartment? => There is currently one in the line running from the pump => to the carb; would it be best if I removed it? It's not a problem that it's in the compartment -- it's much easier to see and service there -- but it would be better placed before the pump. It doesn't make a difference to performance, but with the arrangement you have you should regularly check the screen in the pump for gunk buildup.
