He'd get partly up the hill and then suddenly slow down. So I'd slow down to avoid overtaking him and pretty soon my engine was below its torque peak. Then Keith would pick up speed again, leaving me struggling to get up the hill. My 69 AT certainly had more trouble in the mountains than either John's 66 or Keith's 71, both of which were MT, but I could have done better if I had been able to take better advantage of momentum. Keith was also slaved to his cruise control, so this kept him from "attacking" the hills.
