That sounds a bit strange, my mixture screws are something like 2.5 turns out. Have you got a stock exhaust? If you had an exhaust with less back pressure than the original, that could possibly cause you to run too lean and need to compensate with the idle screws? What sort of distributor have you got? I get about 28MPG out of my '71 Fastback, but it was a lot worse until I got the carbs synced spot on. What about the balance tubes, do you have the late manifolds with the dual tubes? It definitely seems puzzling, but it must be a part that you haven't changed that is causing a problem somewhere.
