He needs the later version. The older one was only used by VW up thru
1960. But The reason I asked is that 41 years, it could have gotten an
older one installed.

Yep, that is the one. And, there are actually 2 different automatic
starters. One has a bronze bushing around the bendix, and the other had
roller bearing. Surprisingly, the bronze bushing one is the better of
the two. The rollers had a tendency to cock a little, and cause a caming
action, causing the bendix to bind.
