Over tightening can strip out the threads, but it won't alter the plug gap. I 
wonder if you had a hard time finding the SP hole when installing that plug and 
managed to push the gap closed at that point.

1/2 turn past finger tight might even be too tight. I don't know a torque 
value; I just tighten them until I feel them contact, and then a bit more to 
compress the gasket.
