Glad tightening helped. Look at the bottom of the sender. There is a nut there, 
and a washer that you have to bend a bit to undo the nut. Just remove the nut 
and washer and pull the alum sleeve off.

If your car was originally bought in the US, or even picked up in Europe and 
brought back under the VW Tourist Delivery Program, then it was originally FI. 
If this is the original engine case the engine number will begin with U, which 
was a FI engine number. If you find a different letter there then let us know 
what you find and we can tell you what it once was.

BTW, there's always the possibility that the case is not original, but if you 
post your VIN and engine # we can tell you whether they seem to match or not.
