OK Steve, I get the picture- I seem to remember that it was a PIA to get the tin back together with the engine out and full access so I guess I won't try that. But I want to do something and really can't drop the motor so is retorquing the lower studs a good idea? In all the manuals for all the cars I've ever read, they are very specific about the order in which heads are torqued. If there is a problem and the lower nuts do tighten up more, won't I just be pulling the heads on at a funny angle and possibly stressing them badly, leading to worse problems a few miles down the road? I guess if I try I'll at least be able to tell if there is a problem at all which warrants dropping the motor, and while I'm at it I can dress the rockers to allow more accurate lash setting.
