We had a system like that in the UK in the 60s - I may have an old  key - it
went sideways into a slot just below the top, and the knob popped up so you
could pull it up - vandal resistant.  Mine was like a flat key shape with two
small prongs.   There is a 5% chance I still have it - maybe two!  Something
like a circlip tool might do.  Can you use a paper clip until Invasion 2004?
