Re: [T3] carb -> FI conversion (hypothetically)
<x-flowed>
Cars that came with stock D-Jet have some special features
like the return fuel line along the tunnel and under the tank,
additional wiring, and the mounting hole for the ecu. Accommodating
all of these things in a car that didn't come with them would
admittedly be quite a chore.
If you can understand the D-Jetronic (not hard, just
different), and you have a bit of time, it's usually cheaper and
easier to fix the fuel injection than install carbs. Plus, you end
up with a slightly better-running system.
On the other hand, if you have carbs and you really want fuel
injection, it's likely to be easier and cheaper to install a more
modern system than to go to a bone stock D-Jet setup, and it will
perform better. People who have decided to start from a clean slate
and move toward fuel injection don't seem to restrict themselves to
D-Jetronic. Folks like Tom Hansen, Dan Zink and Hal Sullivan have
chosen systems that are more modern and sophisticated than
D-Jetronic. Also, more modern systems are more flexible and can
handle engine hotrodding a lot better than D-Jetronic.
