First, on average for VWs you're probably talking about a five-gallon coffee
can, requiring a fair amount of time for it to evaporate. As it evaporates,
fuel vapor spreads out along the ground, so you'd want to give it a lot of
space. Assuming you've got a place for it that's not enclosed, out of the
sun, very large, and safe from children, animals and smokers, I suppose the
likelihood of obvious damage from this method is only moderate. You wouldn't
be doing the atmosphere any favors, however.
