That large bellows in the back is supposed to be in good condition. If it's torn, your engine will suck in hot air from the engine compartment for cooling, rather from the outside (didn't you mention earlier that the engine was running kind of hot?). I think over time (many years), the muffler heat might contribute to the eventual drying and cracking of the bellows, but there is no heat shield for it. Be careful when ordering a new bellows. I have heard reports on this list about cheapo replacements out there that do not last long.
