Re: [T3] Dual 40 DCNF Carbs

<x-flowed>the only failure modes i have seen with l-jetronics so far is backfiring into the intake tract, which can possibly bend the airflow meter's flap. that's it. i never had any other fuel injection problem in the 9 years/30,000 miles i had my 412 wagon so far.

a vacuum control unit that seems much more dependent on close tolerances to work correctly seems more brittle to me. not to mention the mechanics i have spoken to who told me of cars being sent from vw shops to bosch shops and back because no one wanted to work on d-jetronic cars...

besides, just like keith mentioned, very similar air-flow controlled FI systems were used until a few years ago when air-mass metering supplanted air-flow metering.

Uh Oh... one of those rare moments that I differ from Jim..

I have the L Jet on my Opel... and for the first 170K or so it was flawless,
although my father tweeked things a bit when it was new. The air meter,
with the vane, was used well into the 90's at least and is quite well
designed and seems to have a very long service life, there is very little
issue with wear if nobody messes it up. There is no pressure sensor with
brass bellows to have the solder seam fail on.

Fragile wiring? the connectors are MUCH improved with a positive snap lock
and better sheilding against water and dirt, and the rubber covers seem to
hold up better.

Perhaps the biggest plus is the lack of trigger contacts to get dirty and go
intermittant.
I may well use L jet on my Notch when I convert it.
Kjet? I cant get the idle smooth on my Golf... there is only one mixture
adjustment... boy I wish there were some electronics I could fiddle with ...

The 74 type 4 came with L-Jetronic which was the same family as used on
Beetles. I don't agree that this system is more robust. This has a
pivoting air
flap and potentiometer which I find to make this system quite fragile. In
my
opinion the L-Jetronic systems are the worst of all FI worlds: They have
all
the fragile wiring of the D plus the constantly moving and wearing air
flap.

The later K-Jetronic FI as use on Rabbits, etc got almost completely rid
of
the electronics which scares off so many people. It's really a pretty good
system.

I still like the D, but it takes some getting used to.
