The soap and water also has water in it, so I think there's no advantage either way to that. You DON'T want to use regular petroleum grease as that WILL attack the rubber. The big advantage of anything water based is that any of it exposed to the inside or out can be easily sponged off. The rest seems to just dry up and do no harm. Given the propensity of these parts to rust, however, something that contained rust inhibitors might have an advantage.
