That sounds at least 8 batteries too many! Maybe the charging system was over-charging and boiling over the acid. The corrosion is quite common, but if care is taken with the terminals not to hammer the clamps down or maltreat them, it doesn't always occur. My cars don't have a problem with excessive salts around the terminals. One year to burn through the metal is well within the ability of battery acid! Dave.
