IIRC I timed it at > 0s TDC as per Jim Adney's recommendation. Is that timing on your twin carb '71 with the (wrong) FI single vac distributor done with the vacuum hose on or off? TheVW timing info (see my website) seems to suggest the hose should be off for TDC timing on the single vac. FI distrib., but I've no experience of using the wrong set-up. Try removing the hose with the timing light on the mark. Does it change? If so I reckon you should time it with the hose off (or just try it statically at about 7.5 deg BTDC). If the compression was OK last time it's probably still fine (unless there's been a drop in performance meanwhile). The oil only helps show if low compression is due to leaky valves (no improvement) or rings (better with oil). Dave.
