<x-charset iso-8859-1>At the weekly meeting of our local VW club, I paid special attention to this, and every car (all Beetles) had a filter inside the engine bay. None of them showed any sign of bursting into flames. I discussed it with a couple of the other members, and none of them were aware of any problem, other than a tendency for the hoses to come off of the carb or fuel pump if not clamped on properly, which can be disastrous.
