My lit says this screw was adjusted at the factory and should not be 
touched. I imagine that it has to do with setting the spring preload so that the 
valve will open and close with the right voltage, and shouldn't be too hard to 
set properly.

The manual also says that in case of a problem you can turn the screw all 
the way to the left to make the valve open even in the absence of voltage. 
You can do this rather than cut off the plunger.
