Pull you distributor cap and check if there is an arc mark, particularly between 3and 4 "pegs". It almost sounds like 3 is firing at the wrong time, causeing the exhaust pop (valve open) and the clunk (piston the the way up?) May also be a wire which has lost some insulation - run in in the DARK and see if you can see an arc (externally obviously). An arc track in the dizzie will look like a scratch in the "plastic" and may have a black carbaonized trail though it :-) Good luck! Well................. I made some gaskets from a Jello box until I get the proper ones from Jim, and......... NO CHANGE....AAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! It is however clear that it is #3 and not #4 that is popping. If I raise the rpm up a bit above idle I get an occasional loud pop through the exhaust and an ominous sounding clunking noise that sounds like it is coming from the engine. I have tried the screwdriver in the ear trick and do not notice anything unusual when I put it on the case. Left or right side. My neighbor was a nurse and has a stethoscope. Maybe I will borrow it and try to hear something. If I unplug #3 spark plug lead, the engine speed and sound does not change except that the pop and clunking goes away. If I unplug only #4, the rpm drops and the popping and clunking is still there. The valve settings for 3/4 were still ok. I pulled the rocker shaft and everything looks OK. The pushrods for #3 look fine and were seated properly. The valves ends and springs and stuff look ok. I could not fish anything out of the intake port with my magnet when I had it apart. There were no metal bits in the oil when I drained and checked it this morning. I am getting spark at #3. #3 is obviously cooler to the touch after 5 minutes of running or so too. I am really at a loss. I am probably going to pull the engine tonight and pull the 3/4 head off again and see what I see. Maybe pull the cylinder and check the rod and wristpin and stuff. Don't know what else to check at this point. Anybody have any other ideas? The mystery deepens..................
