I was thinking that the open end (front) of the generator was plenty big enough for cooling air flow, but with the cover over the brush, there would not be much air flow around the brush (does that make any sense?). Therefore, I figured there could be a build up of "dust" around the brush area. Probably good to not cover it, but it does look ugly. On the other side of the coin, what is different about the type1 that this cover would be OK? Does the air flow different on a type1 generator? Is the brush located in the cooling airstream? I am not very familiar with other "types".
