I have to say I don't think the 'correct' procedure is all that good,
either, so I can understand why this came about. Relying on belt tension to
turn the engine is iffy and you can't really get a decent-sized socket
wrench in there anyway. Then there's that little bit of reinforcement next
to the timing hole that seems to invite abuse.

I happily turn my engine over with the screwdriver in the timing hole! It is
a hellava lot easier, and unless you have a perfect car, who cares about a
distored hole and some nicks on the fan?
