I'm the one that told him that. My 68 (bought new) did not have one, nor did 
any of the ones I ever saw at the dealers from that time on. I suppose it is 
possible that earlier years came with it, but there is no indication of that in 
the parts list (for any year type 3.)  

I agree that the front cover of the generator is open so there would be some  
air flow even with these covers in place.
