I think the tapered bolts are the better design, but the taper exerts much higher stresses on the metal of the wheel and I suspect that a tapered bolt would just stretch out the hole in most alum rims. If you're wondering about centering the wheel, the best way is for the wheel to have a small center hole that fits the hub closely, like our fronts do on the replacement rotors. BTW, Mercedes refers to these bolts as "spherical collar bolts."
