FWIW, I don't have any VW mags, but my domestic vehicles that have had alloy mags used special lug nuts with a long collar that fits into the wheel's hole, and then a flat-bottomed hex end and a flat washer against the wheel face. Not that any VW wheels are necessarily like this, but it goes to show that not all lug nuts have tapered seats, and some use a different method to prevent the wheel from bearing against the lug threads (i.e., the collar I described).
