I don't think you can assume that it should be straight up. Just adjust it first, 
then look to see where it's at.

Note that the adjusting won't go right unless the return spring on the tranny 
is working. Most of those springs are broken by now. Replacements are 
cheap and they really aren't all that hard to install once you get the hang of it.
