Sometimes it is interesting to do it both ways, but the most telling is with a warm engine. Remove all 4 plugs. Have someone sit in the driver's seat and hold the throttle wide open. You may have to do something to hold the chokes open. Stick the compression gauge in each cyl in turn and have your assistant crank the starter. Just crank until the needle comes up to equlibrium for each cylinder.
