[T3] late model rust

my '73 fastback has the usual rust in the rear pillars around the air 
vents. the rust has spread so much that the metal drain tubes inside 
have huge holes in them. i am afraid that the whole pillars from the top 
corner of the rear window to the bottom corner of the rear window need 
to be replaced on both sides as the rust has spread like cancer 
throughout. is it possible to replace these pillars with clean ones or 
is it impossible because nothing will be supporting the roof after the 
pillars are cut out?
