>> Bolt... It's M10 x 60mm x 1.0 pitch. The local hardware store carries the exact bolt, except it's not threaded the entire length. > >Do you really need it to be fully threaded? > No, but the shank would have to be very short, maybe 1 cm? >Even I would not be adverse to replacing that bolt with a suitable bolt of the proper grade. Keep in mind that VW might well have used bolts from various sources, too. What is the proper grade? This is likely to be an important bolt, and the fact that it is M10 x 1.0 makes this even more clear. > I'm sure it is a heavier bolt, Grade 8. It goes through the wheel cylinder, then through the backing plate, through the entire spindle, and sticks out quite far. One of the reasons I want an original bolt is that you cannot purchase a bolt with a head that takes a 15 mm socket anymore either. I would like my 43K mile car to be as "correct" as possible. I haven't tried a bolt that is available now but a larger head may interfere with the wheel cylinder, the head of the bolt is very close. Location can be seen in the lower left here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/scrapbook/63variant/10162002/bearing_gap2.jpg >Does this bolt pass thru the steering arm on the backside of the backing plate? > Yes. It actually sticks out quite far too, the bolt could be 2/3rds of its length and work fine. I have no idea why such a long bolt was used. -- Everett Barnes Phoenix, AZ ------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe, E-mail to: <type3-off@vwtype3.org> For more help, see http://vwtype3.org/list/
