I have been having this sort of problem with my '63 beetle, but it doesn't have as good a breather as the type 3's do. It keeps getting blocked up with condensation stuff, and causes it to blow out oil. If this is happening to yours you would probably see it (or any other blockage) if you took the plastic cap off the top and looked down there. On a beetle, there is a metal gasket that goes between the generator stand and the case. On a type 3 the breather is installed here, so I am not sure if they have this gasket or not. Anyway, if it gets installed upside down, or the wrong way round it can cause breathing problems. If you need to take the breather off, get one of those special tools that bugpack sells. It looks sort of like a thick hexagon rod with teeth at one end. It works really well when those nuts are stuck hard. Are you sure it is not something simple like being overfilled with oil?
