Testing the engine cold will show up small air leaks between the head and the cylinders that would seal when the engine is hot. Remove all spark plugs, test cold, jot down results, on the wet test, as you test the cylinders squirt some oil into them, if the pressure comes up the rings are bad if the pressure stays the same it's valves or a air leak around the heads. If either test is bad the engine must come out to fix, More than 10 PSI difference Dry- and if the value changes on the wet test, say you had 100 PSI dry and on the wet test it went up to 120 PSI, would say the rings are bad.
