Yes, the caravan brings out the *driver* in everyone, go figure.  On
the way back through eastern Oregon mountains, our caravan had to get
into a rythem.  At first, Phillip was behind the towed square rig, and
lost all his speed at the bottom of hill.  This left me in third gear
half way up.  By the third hill, we'd had enough and passed early on,
never using third again.  I imagine Jim had something similar in
mind.  I know he is a cyclist like me, and there's something to be
said about momentum when your gas pedal is powered by sweat.  I tend
to avoid my brakes also.
