<x-flowed>8 spoke wheels really limit size of tires on all long axle VWs.  My 
notch and 3 of my old squares could only run the 165s on 8 spokes and 
with that, there was almost no clearence to the fender lip!   It is all 
in the offset.  The widest tire I have been able to run on the 
'traditional' aftermarket wheels has been a 205/65/15 and that was on 
mahle 914 wheels that had more than 3.75 inches of backspacing with only 
a total width of 5.5 inches. (and to run that tire, i needed a 3/8 
spacer to keep from rubbing on the torsion arm)
