Hi All,
O.K., so here's the scoop.I traded a 72 Super Beetle to a T1 guy for 69
Squareback w/AT, that had already been switched to carbs. He bought the car
2-3 yrs ago w/o ever hearing it run for $2,500.00. He had already regone thru
the most of the motor, sitting down in his basement, as he didn't know the
P.O..
So the first thing I did after I towed it home was give it a good washing
to get the industrial crud off it. Found that the now P.P.O. had gone nuts w/
undercoating the living crap out of it. It's some kind of greasy, grimey,
sticky junk and it's EVERY- WHERE underneath, I mean even in the headlight
buckets. One of those deals where everytime you go to work on it, you're
gonna get slimed. Ah well.
I finished assembling the motor and put it in. Started compounding the
car ( to help clean it up), did the hood and front fenders- a productive 1st
day.
Friday, I finished running the crispy fuel hoses that were still there,
(gotta replace the broken tee to the vac for the trans). Found that the
P.P.O. had also put in a fuel filter inline to each carb, that was besides
the original stock square one (along w/ it's muffler) under the fuel tank.
Mainly wanted to see what I had. Also found out I didn't have any spark (bad
ignitor).
I finished compounding the rest of the car. Paint still looks pretty
good, came up to a nice shine- though it had been repainted sometime before
the P.O. got it.
I pulled the front seat bases out(no front seats yet) and discovered the
two pair of good plastic seat rails. WOW !
Today I replaced all the fuel hoses and clamps, drained about three
gallons of nasty gas out of the tank. Put two gallons of fresh premium in
and swapped out the 009 dizzy for the one I asked about in an earlier post
today. Now that I had spark, I proceeded to fire it up.Synced the carbs,
swapped #2 / #4 plug wires (from P.P.O.) , got her going and did some minor
tweaking.
TO DO SHORT LIST:
*install front seats-*done*
*replace front brake hoses, and probably readjust rears
*repair/replace air bellows
*find out why left front headlight isn't working, no hi-beams either, bad
relay?
*no brake lights
*pull gas tank sender-have a look-get gas gauge working
*no oil pressure light---bad bulb?
* repair standard equipment rust under the battery
Oh yeah, Keith, it appears to be stock ride height all the way around. Sue
says she thinks it needs to be lowered a notch or two notch in front. :-) ah,
The Darkside.....
