L stands for "Lack" which is German for paint. Marina Blau has code L54D, same as my car. PerL 73 Variant L You see! Just order L54D paint. It will be Marina Blau paint. I didn't know what "L-code" stood for, but this makes sense. I would be surprised if the other German auto makers such as Mercedes and BMW had different "L-codes" for their paints. And, it is so common that all USA paint suppliers use the "L-codes". For certainty, just tell the paint supplier that you are going to paint a Volkswagen with L54D paint. That L-code sets the color, period.
