I don't know if it's been updated, but we used a book titled (I think) Free Camping. It lists the various sites around the US that are, well, free. Some are located in the middle of a small town with the idea that you would end up eating at the local spots. One place is the town nearest Mesa Verde. Check it all out first. National forests, as long as off the main roads is also a free and legal place to be. We spent 4 months cruising the states in our '76 Camper, had a blast. This was many years ago so check for changes in places. Probably a website on free camping even.
