Hello- > I think they were just trying to come up with an economical way to produce > the 912, and realized that they already had a rather high production 4 cyl > engine available. This gave them their pathway to abandoning the 356/912 4 > cylinder which probably came with the usual Porsche production costs. No, not really. It was abandoned 7 years earlier. Porsche 356 production ended in 1964-5. Porsche 911 production began in 1964-5. Porsche 912 production began in 1964-5, using a 1582cc 356 engine. Porsche 912 production ended in 1969, taking the 356 engine with it. Porsche 914-4 (and VW 411) production began in 1968-9, along with the new 1.7L Type 4 engine. Porsche 914-6 production began in 1968-9, using the 2.0L 911T engine. Porsche 914-6 production ended in 1972. Porsche 914-4 "S" production began in 1973, using a modified 2.0L Type 4 engine with unique heads. Porsche 914-4 (both regular and "S") production ended in 1976. Porsche 912E production began and ended in 1976, using many "S" engine components. Porsche 924 production began in 1976. Porsche 928 production began in 1978. By 1976, the major marketing focus of the "baby" Porsche models (i.e. the modern equivalent of the Boxster) became the front-engined watercooled cars. > In reality I think they were right about everything except that they forgot the > extent to which Porsche enthusiasts looked down their noses at anything > VW. I think that *most* of that mentality didn't really take hold until the 80's. The 912E really wasn't that bad of a seller. Porsche production figures don't look like VW production figures. Only some 4000 914's were made that year, and approx. the same number of 911s were made, too. Around 5000 924's were made, too. 2100 for a thrown-together bastard child isn't that bad :-).
