Here is my take on the spindle issue...as an owner of a set of modified spindles. I had Drew's Off-Road make mine; which was the first pair they made. This was about 4 years ago I think. They bought the "plans" for the Type 3 off of a Az. machine shop. They did a really good job, I only had them raise the spindle 1 3/4" though, not enough drop for me (at least this is what I requested the modification be...and to be honest I have not compared them to the stocks (so my advice if you want a nice stance and handling do it at least 2" and maybe 2.25 to 2.5) So I also lowered (raised) the front torsion bars 1 notch. I have to admit it is a pretty nice stance w/ 185/6014's in front (maybe 1 finger of space between tire and fender). The ride is great for me, and with new GR-2's actually not stiff enough for my tastes. I like a high rebound rate, but anyhow, the car is great except for a tad bumpsteer and a little wandering. And the car does not track all to straight often times. The steering problems are the biggest bother to me. Maybe a rebuilt steering box and readjusted camber will help. I have only to lower the rear a notch and add a camber compensator and it will handle pretty damn good on curves, but again highway handling is not all to great. And this is only with 1 notch raised torsion bars w/ all new ends and BJ's and aligned to stock specs. I don't know how the people who have adjusted it 2 notches can stand the steering characteristics. If 2 notches is worse than the 1 notch I have, I could not drive it like that. So my advice is to get the spindles. Jim had a good point about the modification of the spindles though. A new hole had to be drilled for the speedo cable, but luckily the steering arm didn't interfere with it. But eyeballing it sure did seem as if were going to have to start adding material on the opposite side of the arm and then trim away a little so it would fit...but luckily it was not necessary---and that is kind of a iffy thing to do to. My spindles were made really well, great welds done. I have gotten compliments from every mechanic/shop who has seen them and how they were made. And I feel safe using them. As I mentioned earlier on the lists, I had later spindles modified so I could run discs up front. However, when I installed them, one of the calipers would not align correctly and sit evenly over the rotor. So I had to take off a little material from the caliper mounting surface. This did the job. However, my pads are just barely starting to make full contact on the rotors (outside only was affected and a different rates), my final conclusion is that this took place because some of the material was taken off, and that the caliper is seated a little off kilter. I am not sure why there was a different offset, but for whatever reason there was. Since I have replace my dig. camera that was lost in Mexico (no not by me...it was the so called, better half). So I will try to get some pics when I get under there for some adjustments. My next step is going to see if I can get some shims to help adjust the camber back to stock and do something about the bumpsteer.
