Never needed them, but if we had I'm sure there would have been some submarining - better than flying through the windscreen/windshield though. Why not get the reinforcing piece from a later wreck and use that each side. Child seats won't produce the same size forces that would arise with an adult strapped in for the same (survivable) crash. Even a thick backing piece would do the trick, but don't replace with adult belts any time if the mounting strength is not as great as it should be. Put some anti-corrosion around the area and recoat regularly. Dave.
