always leave the car on the ground, but inlfate the tyres to their maximum (or close) it should be written on the sidewall - rock the back and forth every once in a while too. Disconnent the battery but leave it in the car. You may want to charge it back up once a month or so. Fill the gas up - less chance of condensation. If you have the time, I'd suggest putting some Methylated spirits (I forget what you 'muricans call it) in the tank, and then run it nearly empty - then fill up with new fuel and a small amount of Meths. The Meths will make the water mix with the gas, and you can burn it off in the engine. The fresh gas means there should be no water, and the small amount of meths will make any water that forms in the tank mix in with the gas - not sit in the bottom of the tank. If it's inside, leave the windows open a crack to ventilate it - makes sure rodents can't get in! When I roll my cars back and forth, I usually give it a few hard bounces on each corner to keep the suspension moving and help stop shock seals sticking to the shafts. For longer storage it is a good idea to change the oil - old oil is corrosive. It can cause case corrosion and rust on cranks and other steel parts. I usually start my (running) stored cars up once every two months or so and take them to the end of the driveway and back - just to move the oil around in the gearbox, engine and to help prevent a frozen brake or clutch. I run the engine until at least the exhaust system has been hot for a while - it boils and condensation out of the pipes (otherwise they rust out!) and makes sure the cylinders aren't damp. If you're leaving it for only 3 or 4 months, it will be OK not run - at least just turn the motor over by hand to stop the rings sticking to the bores :-) That's all I can think of :-) Allan :-) ----- Original Message ----- From: "William Kunz" <satchel01@mail.com> To: <type3@vwtype3.org> Sent: Saturday, November 16, 2002 11:06 AM Subject: [T3] Winter Storage Preparation... Any tips about storing a vehicle properly (for 3-4 months)? I guess I have questions about: disconnecting the battery? Amount of gas in the tank? Tire pressure? etc...
