While you're in there, check the level of the GL-5 in the final drive. This is often overlooked, with sad consequences. Do you have a copy of the Bentley manual? If not, get one. Here is the info: Volkswagen Official Service Manual Type 3 Fastback and Squareback 1968-1973 published by Robert Bentley, Cambridge, Mass, 1974 ISBN 0-8376-0057-X / LPV 997 383 / VSQU (excellent book, complete and well written) It has everything you will need and will quickly pay for itself. There are a few things that you need to do that are different about the AT. You have to remove 3 bolts that couple the torque converter to the drive plate before you pull the engine; you need to leave the torque converter behind when you do this. You MUST support the rear of the transmission when you pull the engine because without the engine there is no rear support for the AT. The support MUST be in place before you unbolt the engine. You will need to make up something to hold the drive plate still while you unscrew the gland nut. I use a long piece of angle iron with 2 holes drilled in it that match up to 2 of the holes in the drive plate. You will also need a 1- 7/16" socket to undo the gland nut, mine is a 3/4" drive. You'll need to figure out a good way to torque this somewhat accurately to 225 ft-lbs when you're done. Most of this, and much more, is covered in the manual. - Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe, E-mail to: <type3-off@vwtype3.org> For more help, see http://vwtype3.org/list/
