<x-flowed>I did this with a Bug engine. Just bolted it to a separate tranny, got a battery hooked up the starter, oil pres light and power to the coil. A hose into a can of gas, and it was roaring :-)

Use any VW transmission. That will give you a place to mount the starter and a drive shaft if you decide to make it into a dyno later on.
