I wanted to add something to this:

There was an interesting thread recently on one of the electronics
newsgroups where we managed to slaughter a number of sacred cows
related to ignition systems.

One of these was the old one about the capacitor being necessary to tune
the spark to the right resonance, which is NOT true. In the course of this
discussion, someone pointed out that putting the duty cycle at 50% (or in
our case, putting the dwell at 45 deg) places the points opening at the place
in the cam where the points will open at the max rate. This is important to
keep the points from arcing and pitting as they open.

So, again, I recommend that you set your dwell to 45-50 deg.
