Pitting on the (fixed?) points probably means a dodgy capacitor (condensor). Have you got a black Bosch coil or is it a blue one? A higher inductance coil can cause points to erode quicker. Set the timing as required for your model (there's a copy of VWs timing chart on my website). Are you using the right hand end of the four marks? It says vacuum hose off, but Jim reckons it doesn't matter anyway. I can't check on that as my '71 is twin vac and so is the '72 FI. No need to adjust the firing point for unleaded. Dwell is how long the points stay closed for (distributor angle). The 60 degree dwell means the current will flow through the coil for a longer time than if it was 50 degrees dwell, but I doubt it will make much difference. I don't find the dwell is very critical, but as the heel block wears slightly in use, the dwell tends to increase, so it's better to have it a little below the mid-range than high. 500 ppm for unburnt hydrocarbons is a bit high - suggests some sort of ignition or valve problem. Odd that it is running smoothly though. What is happening in the cylinders? Pull the plugs to find out. A little more advance will speed up the engine a bit, but too much can do serious damage - I would prefer to use the factory settings. The vac unit is working I assume? How stock is the set-up? Air cleaner (oil-bath?) OK and clean? Compression OK? Does it do lots of cold short journeys? Dave.
