Hi all, I had an interesting surprise yesterday at our local VW club meeting. As I was pulling into the carpark (in my Toyota, the Type 34 is not roadworthy yet) there was a blue Squareback. This was the first time anyone has ever turned up at the club with anything other than a Beetle (or Buggy) or a Bus. It turned out to be a '72 automatic with original dual carbs. The FI was apparently never sold here, even as an option. This was the first time I have ever seen another automatic Type 3. It was also the best preserved and most original Type 3 (other than a Type 34) that I have had a chance to have a really close look at. For some reason, Type 3s are pretty rare here, although I know that there were loads of them here years ago. As for the '72 dual carb engine, it appears not to be dramatically different from my '69 engine. The only minor surprise was the air cleaner, which is of a Type I have never even seen in a picture, although it was undoubtedly original. It was basically similar to mine, but it had a long square metal tube connecting it to the body, with some kind of spring loaded rod under it, possibly to open and close the flap. Also the butterfly nuts were arranged differently. Other than that, it was nice to see an engine with (more or less) original wiring, because I had to do all of mine myself, and it confirms that I did it properly!
