Re: [T3] long trip, leaky seal

<x-flowed>> I have not had the clutch slip yet. Are there other oily clutch
about-to-go symptoms? The symptoms I have are a chattering at take
off unless I feather the clutch alot. Possibly related is a slight
"shuddering" while driving along at low rpm (not accelerating).

Clutch chatter at take off can be from oil on the surfaces, broken/weak springs in the disc/pressure plate can also cause this. It also can be from the clutch getting glazed or hot spotted. I have had the latter happen, though not on a VW. I I had to replace the flywheel to correct this issue.

Though when I had this happen, I initially replaced the pressure plate and disc, then it started chattering. When this happened the chatter would be worse if I feathered the clutch in. Once fully engaged the clutch was fine. In fact it was very easy to feel the clutch starting to engage at the same time the chatter started

If oil is leaking out bad enough to get on the clutch components, its possible that its been glazed. Get oil on it and heat it up and it will make a lovely coating, just like seasoning a cast iron pan.

I would not expect a shuddering though when driving at low speeds, and not accelerating, unless the clutch is in very bad shape. If thats the case, it would likely be slipping seriously if you put your foot to the floor.
