[T3] Really basic breaker point question

<x-charset iso-8859-1>I've been digging through my books looking for this answer, without success.
I haven't worked with breaker points for about 15 years, and then it was
just once; everything since has been eletronics.  When the rotor is lined up
with the terminals in the distributor cap, should the points be open or
closed?  If they're supposed to be open, there is something amiss in the
distributor I'm working with; they open about half way between the
terminals.
